F. P. Journe
F. P. Journe Byblos
The F. P. Journe Beirut boutique was officially opened on the 5th of September 2014 and marked the brand’s 10th boutique. To celebrate this milestone, the brand launched an entirely new reference called the Chonomètre Bleu Bylos, inspired by the Orient sun set in a Mediterranean blue sky. A total of 99 examples were made, 80 featured western Arabic numbers and 20 featured eastern Arabic numerals.
The Byblos is largely inspired by F. P. Journe’s best-seller, the Chonomètre Bleu, retaining the same dimensions 39mm x 8.30mm and iconic tantalum case. Byblos, a UNESCO world heritage site, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and was the cradle of the euro-Mediterranean civilisation.
A unique dial
The dial depicts the sun shining through the Mediterranean blue sky and features traits that are unique to this series. Most F. P. Journe dials are stamped with the logo, this particular reference makes use of the open-worked dial by having the logo engraved directly onto the movement. The dial or rather the movement is signed F. P OURNE, the ‘J” is inscribed in the Phoenician alphabet representing the letter ‘Yodh’. Pronounced «J», it symbolizes the hand, emphasising the importance of handcrafting in the F.P. Journe creations. The dial forgoes any mentioned of the usual ‘Invenit et Fecit’ which is replaced by ‘BYBLOS’. The Mediterranean blue cut-out features an hour circle as well as a minute track. Similarly, the delicately placed seconds register is finished in the same color. A majority of the dial is made up of guilloche and perlage found and at 3 o’clock the winding stem is visible along with part of the gear chain. The contrasting ivory white coloured stainless steel allows for the piece to be easily legible.
The distinction between the manually wound and automatic movements can be divided into the following, Octa (automatic) and Souverain (manually wound). This manually wound 18-carat gold movement, calibre 1304, measures 3.75mm thick allowing for the overall dimensions of the Chonomètre Bleu Bylos to remain modest at 40mm x 8.30mm. The movement features twin barrels, similar to the classic configuration of precision watches, resulting in stable power transmitted to the movement. The architecture of the movement is visible through a sapphire case back, and most of the gear chain is visible thanks to the openwork dial. The baseplate is decorated with perlage and meulé Soleil cotes and the screw heads are black polished. Each example is limited by a dedicated serial number, XX/99-BYBLOS
