This F. P. Journe Chronographe Rattrapante features one of the most complicated chronographs made by the Genevois Manufacture. The use of grade 5 Titanium for the case and bracelet results in an unbelievably light watch which weighs just 85 grams. The LineSport has gradually evolved and now represents some of F. P. Journes finest designs and calibres.

After having laid the foundations of both core collections, Souverain and Octa, F. P. Journe decided to gradually present their version of a Sports Collection. In 2011, 10 years after the brand was founded, the first sports piece, the Centigraphe Sport, was introduced to the market. Naturally, this was not an ordinary revamp of the original Centigraphe Souverain, this marked the first time the brand used a 42mm case paired with a full aluminum movement. To mark the launch of this new collection and reference the first Centigraphe Sport bearing serial Number 001 was donated to raise funds in relief aid to the victims of the tsunami and earthquake in Japan. On the 31st of May 2011, the stated piece sold for $465’170 close to ten times its original estimate. Since then the collection has gradually evolved and houses some of the most complex movements such as the Chronographe Rattrapante which was introduced shortly after only watch 2017. The Chronographe Rattrapante (split chronograph) is made available in Grade 5 Titanium, 18-carat Rose Gold and Platinum. The titanium version is the only example that features a semi-skeletonized dial and is considerably lighter than its counterparts.

This 44mm Chronographe Rattrapante (CM), F. P. Journe was originally introduced in 2018. The CM represents the first split-seconds movement to be introduced exclusively within the lineSport. The overall comfort of the watch is achieved by the rather unique feature which does not use traditional lugs this allows the relatively large case 44mm x 12.1mm to fit rather well on the wrist, the importance lies in adjusting the bracelet to a snug fit. With functionality in mind, the rubber inserts found on the side profiles of the case are used to protect the watch from any shocks or scratches, just like the bumper of vintage cars. The modestly sized rubber crown retains the classic rope-like pattern found on all of F. P. Journe’s pieces.

The anthracite aluminum dial is matte-finished in contrasting dark grey, with classic F. P. Journe numerals. The sapphire second dial, found at 3 and 9 o’clock, is fixed by a dual Titanium circle, screwed on the Aluminium dial. The 60-second sweeping seconds are found at 9’oclock and the 30-minute chronograph counter is found at 3 o’clock. The dual bell-shaped pays homage to the iconic design of the original Octa Reserve de Marche. The dial consists of 12 Superluminova applied numerals as well as the superluminova hour and minute hands.

The Movement

The manual winding aluminum calibre 1518 was inspired by the Only Watch 2017, however, the new movement features a chronograph direct gearing with a rocking pinion avoiding the traditional jump of the hand at the start. The movement consists of 285 parts when uncased and provides up to 80 hours of power reserve (without the use of the chronograph). The aluminum movement is finished to the usual high standard with circular stripes on the bridges, circular graining on the baseplate, polished screw heads with chamfered slots, pegs with polished rounded ends, and straight-grained steel work. The overall thickness of the movement measures a modest 6.80mm, resulting in fine engineering to integrate two rather large date disks.
